Bev Perdue for Governor

North Carolina is being transformed all around us.  We’re one of the fastest growing states in America.  We’re competing with China and India.  Technology is changing the way we do business…the way our kids learn… and how our families stay connected.

So the issue for us to decide is not if North Carolina is going to change.  It’s how North Carolina is going to change – how we can work together to make the new North Carolina a better North Carolina.

As North Carolina’s next Governor, I will be committed to rallying people from all walks of life behind a shared vision for our future and taking the bold, progressive steps necessary to make that vision a reality.  At the same time, I know that in order to build a better North Carolina we must build upon and expand our state’s traditional faith in opportunity, hard work, and personal responsibility.

Candidates for Governor have an obligation to spell out their vision for our future and how they plan to get us there.  So during the course of this campaign, I will use this web page to highlight initiatives that I will pursue as Governor to build a new North Carolina for the 21st century as well as those that I have already begun as Lieutenant Governor.

We need to get serious about the goal of quality health care for all North Carolinians – and that must include mental health care.
A plan to provide significant tax relief for seniors by expanding North Carolina's homestead exemption, freezing property tax evaluations, and establishing a family caregiver tax credit.
The Endowment for Positive Gubernatorial Campaigns will eliminate special interest financing of gubernatorial campaigns.

As North Carolina’s next Governor, Bev Perdue will be committed to putting the ugly historical chapter of forced sterilization in our state behind us by bringing justice to those families who were so tragically victimized by it.

As the chief generator of new jobs and business innovation, small businesses are vital to the overall health of North Carolina’s economy.   As North Carolina’s next Governor, Bev will make sure that targeted pro-small business policies are a centerpiece of our state’s economic development strategy.

The licensing of the Cliffside coal-fired power plant in Rutherford County must represent the end of an era for North Carolina.  We should not license another coal-fired power plant to operate in our state.  But that is not enough.  The Cliffside controversy should serve a larger purpose for those of us concerned about our environment, our economy and our energy future.  As Governor, I intend to use the Cliffside experience as a fulcrum on which to move North Carolina energy policy in a new direction.

“NC OpenBook” will create an easy-to-use search engine and website for all state contracts and grants as an alternative to hard-to-navigate state websites and non-existent online records.
Bev Perdue has announced four critical steps that will enable North Carolina to improve its transportation infrastructure, make the system run more efficiently, and help North Carolina address its transportation revenue shortfall.
The Cool Cities Assistance Initiative will aid North Carolina municipalities that sign the US Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement with grants and funds to help them meet their greenhouse gas emissions reduction plans.
Campaigns for public office are too often full of empty promises from candidates. But Bev Perdue knows that we cannot build a new and better North Carolina on political rhetoric.
BRAC Budget Reform, modeled after the federal BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) process, will significantly reform the budget process in North Carolina.
Main Street Solutions is an initiative to boost the economic development of small towns and cities across North Carolina. It is a major transformation and expansion of the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Main Street program.
Bev Perdue calls for expanding the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program in order to attract more of North Carolina's best college students into the teaching profession.
The foundation for North Carolina’s progress in the 21st century is being built in classrooms throughout our state every day. As Governor, I will remain focused on education and the preeminent role that teachers play in moving our state forward.
